Making A Matcha Latte

A matcha latte consists of matcha powder (made from the finely-ground leaves of certain green tea plants), water, and milk. How is it made? First, a few spoonfuls of matcha are blended with water to form a paste. Then, steamed milk is added, as it is with a normal latte, allowing baristas to create latte art on the drink. Effectively, the highly-concentrated matcha “paste” is used instead of espresso, but otherwise, the ingredients are the same.

Rob Good owns Kudos Coffee, a coffee shop in Hampshire, UK. He tells me about how he and his team prepare the drink. “We put a spoonful of matcha in a jug with either water, milk, or a milk alternative and mix it using the steam wand,” Rob says. “We found that with a whisk you still have a few tiny lumps in the drink. By steaming, however, you get a nice, smooth finish. Customers preferred it when we changed to this method. ”

Looking to enjoy a matcha latte at home? Well, first, make sure your matcha is suitable for consumption. Quality matcha will have information on its origin or producer. Make sure it’s fresh (matcha has a six-month lifespan) and kept in a tin to prevent it from being overexposed to heat and air. If the leaves are brown, this indicates that the matcha is “stale”. While it’s not unsafe to drink, the flavor will not be as vibrant as normal.

For a serving for one person, you will need:

  • 15g of filtered water, boiled to around 90 ° C
  • 5g matcha powder
  • 250g milk (or non-dairy alternative)
  • Sweetener, such as honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • A whisk

Mix the matcha, the boiling water, and the optional sweetener in a jug and stir thoroughly. Heat the milk until steaming (make sure to check the temperature if you’re using a non-dairy alternative) and use a whisk to froth the milk. Pour the milk straight into the mug (latte art optional) and enjoy.

Some variations include serving the matcha latte with cold milk, over ice, or topped with sweetened whipped cream to form a “frappuccino”. One famous variation of the drink, the “military latte”, was created by Hiroshi Sawada, the first Asian World Barista Champion at the Latte Art World Championship. The military latte combines matcha powder with espresso, cocoa powder, and vanilla syrup.


Our Starbucks expert finds a hidden new green tea drink on the menu.

Starbucks Japan is usually pretty open about their new and seasonal drink offerings & # 8211 especially when it & # 8217s cherry blossom season & # 8211 but once in a while, they & # 8217ll sneak something into their menu without making a fuss about it.

Luckily, we have the seasoned eyes of our Japanese-language reporter and Starbucks lover K. Masami to scan the menu for anything new. It was those eyes that recently discovered a new Starbucks Japan and Teavana collaboration item: an Iced Matcha Tea Latte.

Until now, the only way to get an iced tea latte at Starbucks Japan was to order an Iced Chai Latte, or order a black iced tea with a shot of white mocha syrup and milk (another K. Masami pro tip). Now the Iced Matcha Tea Latte (starting at 440 yen, or US $ 4.02) is joining the family, but only from May 26 to August 31.

If you & # 8217ve ever made a matcha latte on your own before, you might have the same question as K. Masami had when she first read the name: & # 8220How do they dissolve the powder? & # 8221 It takes a lot of skill and hot water to make a matcha latte not taste powdery. So as they made her drink, Masami watched the barista in action. While an iced chai latte just involves mixing the chai base and milk together in a Starbucks cup, the Iced Matcha Tea Latte included the extra step of mixing it in the Frappuccino blender.

Masami was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted deliciously unique from the hot Matcha Tea Latte. The cold temperature made it taste more matcha-y than its warmer counterpart, yet it was less sweet as well. It had a smooth mouthfeel that was the perfect balance of bitter and sweet, and its aftertaste was refreshing.

What kind of matcha should I use in this matcha latte recipe?

We get this question all the time. Our best matcha for latte blends are either our Superior Ceremonial Matcha or the Organic Ceremonial Matcha. These are incredibly versatile blends that allow you to make an affordable matcha latte with reduced levels of sweetener. Just note that the Organic Ceremonial Matcha has an overall lighter matcha taste and go better with alternative milks. Our Superior Ceremonial Matcha pairs best with regular cow’s milk.

You can also use any of our other ceremonial grade matcha blends to make the matcha latte, but it can get costly very quickly. Most of the nuanced flavors will also be lost amidst the milk and sweetener. It is possible to use our Creative Culinary to make matcha lattes, but we discourage this. You may end up adding more sugar and / or milk to balance the more pronounced bittersweet taste of our Creative Culinary Matcha.

Best way to mix matcha and water for matcha lattes

Where possible, we try to only incorporate tools most people already have in the kitchen. But for this matcha latte recipe, our recommendation is to mix the matcha and water in a separate bowl using a bamboo whisk.

  • We do not recommend the shaking method because the matcha mixture is quite thick. Shaking it up in a bottle may result in some wastage if you can’t get every drop out easily.
  • We also do not recommend battery-operated frothers because these tend to clump up the matcha. They do best where there is a lower amount of matcha compared to water.
  • You may use a blender if you prefer that. We usually avoid blenders because of the extra cleanup required.
  • If you are using a tall glass to make your matcha latte, consider purchasing a longer bamboo whisk. These also come with smaller heads that allow you to whisk your matcha into a smaller bowl / glass.

Which milk and sweetener to use for matcha lattes

We’ve tested a bunch of ingredients for matcha latte, and our favorite is regular cow’s milk and powdered brown sugar. Of course, this is just our preference. Feel free to swap the type of milk or sweetener if you have dietary restrictions or just simply prefer something else. We have tried this matcha latte recipe with many other alternative milks (almond, soy, macadamia, oat) as well as other types of sweetener (acacia honey, simple syrup, maple syrup, monkfruit sweetener, stevia). They are all perfectly viable alternatives to make matcha latte.


Dairy-Free Matcha Latte Substitutes

If you want to make your matcha green tea latte dairy-free, you can totally sub coconut milk or almond for whole milk. They & # 8217re both super tasty and froth up similarly to cow & # 8217s milk. I prefer coconut milk personally (especially with Dose & Co & # 8217s dairy-free vanilla collagen creamer, which is made with coconut milk), but both are great dairy-free options!

A new culinary sensation appeared: dalgona. Everyone seems to enjoy it coffee drink, very photogenic and creamy, which flooded the feeds of Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.

Dalgona, whose name comes from a street dessert in South Korea, is a recent phenomenon, but the recipe itself is not new.   3. Pour the cream, then beat the composition using a manual mixer until it reaches the desired creaminess.
  4. Put a few ice cubes in a glass. Pour the milk on top, leaving room for the matcha cream.
