Food Halls

Gone are the days of eating in the shopping mall cafeteria. Food halls have emerged as one-stop shops for consumers, where visitors can check out local vendors and pop-ups that reflect the area's trendiest flavors. Union Market is DC's pioneer in this realm, equipped with numerous food options (barbeque, arepas, seafood and more) and small retail shops. You can see outdoor movies there in the summer. Nearby, La Cosecha celebrates Latin American culture, cuisine and conversation. Birria

Birria is a traditional Mexican dish, originally made with goat meat, but can also made with other meats. This dish can be served as a stew or as taco filling and the taco version of this traditional dish has taken the social media world by storm. You can find Birria, Sopas, or Boing at Taqueria Xochi on U Street from Chef Teresa Padilla who is a 16-year veteran of José Andrés ThinkFoodGroup restaurants. On weekends, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' grand expansion, The REACH, hosts Victura Park, an outdoor pop-up wine garden and cafe. The Hilton Brothers and Chef Erik Bruner-Yang collaborated on this winery-inspired setting that offers charcuterie boards and light snacks, as well as beer, wine, adult seltzers and other beverages. Looking for that American Chinese takeout nostalgia? Chef Tim Ma and Andrew Chiou offer American-Chinese cuisine in the compostable white rectangular cartons we all grew up with at Lucky Danger. You can dig into dumplings, hot and sour soup, kung pao chicken and more at Lucky Danger in Prather's Alley or Arlington's Westpost shopping center. If you're looking for a place with great drinks and rotating Black-owned restaurants, look no further than Sandlot Southeast, where restaurants can gain rent-free access to two kitchens to showcase their work. La Vie

DC’s rivers do their best French Riviera impression at La Vie, a stunning and sleek restaurant at The Wharf featuring views of the Washington Channel from its rooftop terrace. Sophisticated Mediterranean vibes abound as you choose from a cocktail list divided into “Dip Your Toes,” “Dive In” or ”Off the Deep End” options and take in the waterfront scenes. Whiskey Charlie

Nautical vibes and top-notch cocktails are the name of the game at Whiskey Charlie, the rooftop bar perched atop the Canopy by Hilton hotel at The Wharf. Catch the perfectly Instagrammable sunset while enjoying a range of delightful drinks – we’re big fans of the Gentlemen's Pirate (Redemption bourbon, Grand Marnier, orange & walnut bitters) and Clouds Over Provence (vodka, blue velvet tea, blackberries & citrus). Top of the Yard

There’s perhaps no bar in DC that has more Natitude than Top of the Yard, which can be found on top of the Hampton Inn & Suites Washington DC - Navy Yard. You can catch a Washington Nationals game all spring and summer while noshing on ballpark-themed bites and brews at this rooftop abode that overlooks the gorgeous Nationals Park. El Techo

Red Derby

Get your dive bar fix at Red Derby in Columbia Heights, sporting a beer list heavy on cans to go with thoughtful beer-shot specials – who wouldn’t want to try Pabst Blue Ribbon with Fireball? You can find this rooftop and green space atop Union Market. With many vendors in the market below and snacks and cocktails offered at this posh spot, a good time is assured. Guests can lounge on the turf or relax at a picnic table to admire in the 360-degree city views. Whether you reserve a spot or walk in, please follow safety regulations.

The W Hotel’s swank rooftop bar and lounge, POV, overlooks the White House and is favored by DC’s see-and-be-seen set. The view of the Washington Monument isn’t too shabby either. Bottle service is available at this hot spot and you’ll want to dress to impress if you head there for cocktails. Reservations are recommended.

Flash

Adorned with decorative plants and disco balls, this rooftop bar dubbed the “Green Room” provides plenty of funky beach vibes. Sip on a variety of cocktails and slushies paired with sandwiches and snacks, while overlooking the Shaw neighborhood. Reservations are recommended as seating is limited.

Graham Rooftop

Get a bird’s eye view of historic Georgetown and Washington, DC at the top of The Graham Hotel. Another quintessentially American street food is the hotdog, a humble yet iconic snack. For simple, yet satisfying hotdogs, you can try The Partisan‘s Haute Dog, made with premium Angus beef and garnished with flavorful red onions plus their homemade condiments. Their hot dogs may look unassuming, but take just one bite and you’ll know that they’re top-notch! If you’re a little more indulgent with your garnishes, you’re sure to enjoy the hot dogs at Dog Hous in Bethseda. Here, you can dress your hot dogs with everything from arugula to avocado, tomato, and spicy basil, all to your heart’s content.


4. The Green Zone

Celebrated Middle Eastern pop-up turned brick-and-mortar craft cocktail bar, the Green Zone is one of the most unique and popular spots in Adams Morgan. The bi-level bar puts Iraqi, Lebanese, Turkish, and Moroccan flavors and cultures front and center, with vintage Middle Eastern travel and movie posters adorning the walls and bathrooms designed to look like Turkish baths. Classic Green Zone cocktails include the Lebanese No. 1, with cognac, apricot, lemon and “exotic stuff.” Note: You will find vague ingredients on the menu (i.e. “exotic stuff”) that you don’t recognize — and that’s intentional, to keep a few flavor profiles under wraps.


Colada Shop

We need more all-day spots like these tropically hued Cuban cafes where you can drop in at any hour for a coffee or cocktail—we love Barmini alum Juan Coronado’s piña coladas and fresh-mint mojitos. Start the day with a cortado and avocado tostada or linger in the evenings over flaky empanadas, ham croquetas, and one of the best Cuban sandwiches in town. (The lovely rooftop in DC is the place in nice weather.) Look for a third location to open at the Wharf this fall.


Cassino (card game)

Cassino, spelled Casino in Europe where it was first referenced in 1792 England, is a fishing card game that&rsquos similar to the Italian game Scopa which came along later. After fading in popularity overseas, it gained favor in the U.S. in the late 1800s after the Royal Cassino, Spade Cassino and Diamond Cassino variations arose. It was eventually overshadowed by Gin Rummy.

Probably an even further reach given all the other choices, but there are several drinks named after card games i.e. the Blackjack Sling, Poker Face, Rummy Fix and more.

1909 - the original Casino Cocktail first appears in print. 6 However, this may have actually been seven years or more prior to this date as the January 1903 Mixer and Server shows an advertisement for Didier&rsquos &lsquoReminder&rsquo that says over 3,000 of them were sold in the past eight months, referring to a previous edition we are unable to examine. 7 WorldCat doesn&rsquot show any of the book&rsquos history, but the Office of the Register of Copyrights within the Library of Congress received two copies of The Reminder on December 24, 1900. 8

1923 - Casino Cocktail No. 2 debuts in another classic bartending manual and quite possibly two years earlier, but we don&rsquot have access to its 1st edition. 9

1930 - Casino Cocktail Nos. 4 and 5 (twice) surface in writing with the No. 5 Casino Special being credited &ldquoas served by Charlie in the American Bar of the Pistany Private Casino, Pistany, Czechoslovakia. Look out for the word, &lsquoSpecial.&rsquo It means either good or bad, and the decision is strictly up to you. We understand Czechoslovakians are Bohemians. 1934 - rye whiskey is substituted for Scotch whisky in drink No. 5. 14

Banana Cafe might be the closest you can get to a tropical island in Washington, D.C. The piano bar standouts out in the popular restaurant row of Eastern Market, for the building’s aesthetic. Once inside, you feel as if your are on vacation. Serving Puerto Rican, Cuban and Tex Mex food, the restaurant offers everything from mofongo to quesadillas. Adams Morgan isn’t exactly lacking in bars for you to choose from. 18th street is packed with bars with varying cuisines, themes and styles. So it can easy to pick what you like and stick to it. If you only stick to the main drag of Adams Morgan, consider venturing a little closer to the Dupont Circle area. Larry’s Lounge is a simple bar, known for it’s low-key atmosphere, great prices and drinks. Go for their popular happy hour and get their signature rum punch.

Minibar is one of the many extremely successful restaurants created by the world-renowned José Andrés. It’s not your everyday restaurant Andrés bills it as “a study in avant-garde cooking” and as food must be paired with a beverage, the chef created a “culinary cocktail lab,” Barmini.
