In some ways, 2016 has felt like the year that would never end. With endless political fighting and news coverage, celebrity deaths, and domestic and international crises, it’s a sweet relief that 2017 is mere weeks away. But before the year comes to a close, it’s time to look back on some of the biggest entertaining trends of the year, just in case you’re stumped for New Year’s Eve party ideas, want to reminisce on the past 12 months, or have an event to throw before the clock strikes midnight.

This year once again saw technology at the forefront of party planning and execution. Emojis were a favorite theme for children’s birthday parties and adults gathered together to binge-watch shows and major events on their favorite streaming services. Plus, if you didn’t share your party on social media with a customized hashtag or viral mannequin challenge, you may as well not have thrown a party at all.
There was, of course, a little bucking of the trend. Outdoor-themed events (taking place indoors) and old school formal affairs like the cocktail party also had a surge in frequency.
