What Is Jicama?

When you look at the solid brown orb known as jicama the word "bean" probably won't be the first thing you think of. Jicama appears to be a root vegetable, but it's also a member of the Fabaceae family, the same group that counts peas as the main member. Jicama (pronounced HEE-kah-mah) doesn't look, feel or act like a pea or bean, though there may be the smallest bit of the flavor ensconced in this ingredient's crunchy white flesh. This veggie is commonly used in Mexican cuisine, and there is plenty you can do with it.


What Are Jicama Fries?

Jicama fries are derived from the jicama root vegetable, basically a type of turnip. Today, it’s being used as a low carb replacement for potatoes. Don’t get your hopes up too much. They don’t taste exactly like French fries, but they are still delicious: crispy on the inside and juicy all over. Sprinkled with the right spice mix, you have yourself a healthy, guilt-free snack.

Of course, there’s not one set recipe for Jicama fries. Food bloggers are using different methods and ingredients to cook up these babies. Some are frying them with spices and herbs, while others are dousing them in mushroom gravy, and some are whipping up the most delectable dips. The best thing? Most of these are either low carb or vegan and low in calories!

Which jicama recipe is best? There’s not one, but many you can choose from. In just a moment, we’ll take you through our favorites!


Instructions

So how do you make jicama fries? In this recipe, I start by microwaving the jicama strips to soften them. Then I add olive oil and spices and bake them in a hot oven until tender-crisp. The detailed instructions are listed in the recipe card below. Here are the basic steps:

You start by peeling the jicama and cutting it into strips. As mentioned above, these days you can also find it in many stores already cut into strips.

Next, you microwave the strips to make them somewhat tender, then dry them with paper towels.

Toss them with olive oil and spices, then bake for about 40 minutes in a 400°F oven.


Jicama Fries

For those of you who love French fries but are following a low carb or keto diet, it might be time to explore an alternative to those traditional fries made from potatoes. Jicama is a crisp, white-fleshed tuber from Central America that is often used in Mexican cooking. The exterior is fibrous and papery, but when peeled away it reveals a crisp inside that resembles a raw potato or pear. The flavor is subtly sweet and starchy, making it a smart swap for fries.

Start by peeling the jicama to remove the firm exterior. Use caution because it tends to be a bit more difficult to peel a jicama than a potato. Once the jicama is peeled, it should be cut into fry-like pieces. Thinner pieces will cook faster and yield crisper fries.

Because jicama has a mild flavor, it pairs well with bold seasoning. South-of-the-border inspired flavors work well, such as chili powder, garlic, onion, and cumin. Make sure the jicama fries are well seasoned with salt as well. For a burst of fresh flavor, jicama fries are great finished with a squeeze of fresh lime and a sprinkle of fresh chopped fresh cilantro just before serving.


Chile Lime Jicama Sticks – Crunchy & Refreshing Keto Snack!

In a large bowl, toss the jicama with lime juice. Toss around with chile powder and salt to taste. Add in chopped cilantro. Enjoy!

5 Delicious Recipes for Low-Carb Jicama “Tortillas”

At my local grocery store I picked up an interesting whole food wrap, called a jicama “tortilla.” Jicama is a crisp, sweet, edible tuber, with a tough brown peel, and smooth white flesh. It is widely used in Mexican cuisine. Now before you go, “ewwww,” let me tell you that these wonderful, round, raw slices are pliable and delicious with the right filling. If you are eating raw, vegetarian/vegan, low-carb, or Trim Healthy Mama, this little slice can really help bring a recipe in line with your diet! Traditional taco fillings would probably not work with this fresh flavor and texture, but I tried a few combinations that were terrific!

Dice an avocado, add a pinch of pink Himalayan salt, then mix in cilantro or parsley, sliced tomato, and finely chopped green onion. Yum! Make a pot of Mexican Marigold Mint tea to pair with this delicious meal.

A fresh tabbouleh filling is lovely with a jicama tortilla! If you can tolerate tabbouleh with bulgur, by all means use it. If you need a recipe that is gluten-free, try quinoa rather than bulgur. Finally, I found this recipe that is seed/grain free. Ground chickpeas substitute for bulgur and quinoa in this recipe. This makes a delish “feast in the middle east.”

This wrap worked really well with sliced deli turkey, shredded carrots, herbs, shredded kale or lettuce, and a homemade green goddess dressing. M-m-m.

The jicama tortillas have the appearance and pliability of rice wraps. Adding chicken, julienned carrots, and shredded napa cabbage or other greens would make a lovely change to a lettuce or rice wrap. Here’s a terrific recipe for Szechuan Chicken Rice Wraps . Simply substitute the rice paper/wraps with the jicama tortilla. Serve with the suggested sauce or make a fresh peanut sauce to serve on the side.

Jicama has a crunchy, light, and slightly sweet texture somewhat similar to watermelon. A light watermelon dice with a fresh poppyseed dressing in a jicama wrap is heavenly. The watermelon is not low-carb, of course, but it is a much healthier alternative to other sugar-laden desserts.

How To Cut Jicama For Tortillas

Are you ready to make a batch of fresh jicama tortillas? They are easier than many veggie tortilla recipes, because you don’t have to shred and mix any kind of batter. Instead, jicama tortillas are basically sliced jicama!

  • Cut off the ends of the jicama, so they are wide and flat.
  • Peel the jicama. Placing the jicama flat side down, use a paring knife or peeler to peel off the skin. Start from the top and move down toward the counter, then flip and repeat to get the edges of the other side.
  • Use a mandolin to slice the jicama into really thin tortillas. Try to use the thinnest setting whenever possible to get the best results. If you want to know how to thinly slice jicama, this is really the best way. A knife is not recommended, because they will be too thick and will not bend well.

PRO TIP: If your jicama is too large, it might not fit on the mandolin. If this happens, you can trim it after peeling to make it a bit smaller.


How to make keto fries with jicama

You need to peel and slice the fresh jicama unless you can find them already peeled and cut into sticks. Because it&rsquos difficult to get uniform slices by hand I used a mandoline slicer with a very sharp blade.

One thing about jicama is that it&rsquos very crisp. Therefore, it&rsquos best to boil the raw jicama before baking. I put them in boiling water for about ten minutes before cooking them in the oven.

I was in the mood for seasoned low carb fries, so I sprinkled on some spices. If you like hot spicy, feel free to add some cayenne powder. I kept it on the mild side for mine.

There are many different seasoning blends you can use. I had a large jar of smoky paprika so I used that along with cumin. Garlic powder and salt were also sprinkled in.

After mixing in the seasonings, the keto fries are spread out evenly on a greased baking sheet. I like to just drizzle on some avocado oil or olive oil. Then, the low carb french fries are baked at 400°F for about 30 minutes.
