Paula Deen Comic Book to Come Out in October

The publishers refuse to 'jump on the bandwagon' and are going to continue with the comic book

Sure, she admitted to using the "N" word and subsequently lost a dozen or so business partnerships, but at least Paula Deen can rest easy knowing she will forever be able to say she was a comic book character.

Bluewater Productions, which publishes a series of comic books featuring female celebrities, will be releasing a book Female Force: Paula Deen in October, a biography discussing her rise and fall from grace, Reuters reports. "She really changed cooking — and Southern cooking — for women," Bluewater president Darren G. Davis told Reuters.

The book had been in production for months before any of the most recent controversy happened; "We're not jumping on the bandwagon," Davis said, saying they were going to stick with the concept. "We're moving forward with this 'Female Force' series because she fits in with women like Julia Child and Barbara Walters," David added. "We're not going to flambé her."

Deen will be joining the ranks of Martha Stewart, Julia Child, and Oprah, who have all been commemorated with their own comic book from Bluewater.

Comic book to detail rise, fall of celebrity chef Paula Deen

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Celebrity chef Paula Deen, who lost book deals, contracts and her television cooking show on The Food Network after she admitted using a racial slur, is set to be a comic book star of female empowerment, a publisher said on Wednesday.

Bluewater Productions, which publishes a series of female celebrity-driven comic books, said the biography comic book called “Female Force: Paula Deen” will be released in October and include Deen’s fall from grace.

“She really changed cooking - and Southern cooking - for women,” said Bluewater President Darren G. Davis, who added that the comic book had been in the works for several months before many of Deen’s business partners cut ties with her.

Davis said Bluewater, which has partnered with celebrities such as TV host Ellen DeGeneres and actor William Shatner, had reached out to Deen for a partnership several months earlier but the 66-year-old Southern food doyenne has not yet responded.

The partnership would involve the company donating money to a charity chosen by Deen and running ads for the charity on Deen’s behalf. Deen will not receive any money from the comic.

“We’re not jumping on the bandwagon,” Davis said about Deen’s business partners who distanced their brands from the celebrity chef.

“We’re moving forward with this ‘Female Force’ series because she fits in with women like Julia Child and Barbara Walters,” David added. “We’re not going to flambé her.”

The bulk of the comic book will be about the entrepreneur who turned a home-based catering business into a culinary empire. Printings of the comic books range from about 1,000 copies to 150,000, Davis said, but he didn’t yet know how many Paula Deen copies would go to print.

Deen’s multi-million dollar business of cookbooks, restaurants and home supplies began to crumble last month when a legal deposition was released in which Deen, who is white, said that she had used the “N-word” in the past.

Although Deen said she never intentionally hurt anyone, she lost about a dozen business deals after the deposition surfaced in court documents, including partnerships with retailers Target Corp and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

This book is my proudest achievement so far, and I just have to tell y’all why I am so excited about it. My family is growing and expanding all the time. We’re blessed with marriages and grandbabies, and so sharing these recipes for honest, down-home dishes feels like passing a generation’s worth of stovetop secrets on to my family, and yours.

I’ve been cooking and eating Southern food my whole life, and I can tell you that every meal you make from this book will be a mouthful of our one-of-akind spirit and traditions. These recipes showcase the diversity and ingenuity of Southern cuisine, from Cajun to Low-Country and beyond, highlighting the deep cultural richness of our gumbos and collards, our barbecues and pies. Paula Deen Comic Book to Come Out in October - Recipes

ME's best-known character may be Ghost Rider, a horror-themed Western avenger created by writer Ray Krank and artist Dick Ayers in 1949. Several featured excellent covers by Frank Frazetta.

Other original characters include the jungle goddess Cave Girl, drawn by Bob Powell, who also worked on their superhero title The Avenger.

In late 1947, Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster collaborated once again with editor Vin Sullivan, on a new oddball hero book called Funnyman, a slapstick-comedian hero. Both as a comic book and as a comic strip, however, the character failed to find an audience.

Archie was a huge hit which led to the company changing its name to Archie Comic Publications in 1946.

Archie Comics the title of the company's longest-running publication, the first issue appearing with a cover date of Winter 1942. Starting with issue #70, the title was shortened to simply Archie. The flagship series was relaunched from issue #1 in July 2015 with a new look and design suited for a new generation of readers, although after #32 it reverted to its historic numbering with #699. Archie Comics characters and concepts have also appeared in numerous films, television programs, cartoons, and video games.

In November 1939 (with a January 1940 cover date), Pep Comics #1 debuted with the Shield, the first USA patriotic comic book hero, created by writer and managing editor Harry Shorten and designed by artist Irv Novick. The Shield was a forerunner for Simon's and Kirby's Captain America, being published 13 months earlier.

Among Novelty's best-known and longest-running titles were the companion titles Blue Bolt and Target Comics.

During its nine-year run, Novelty had a roster of creators that included Al Avison, Dan Barry, Carl Burgos, L.B. Cole, Bill Everett, Al Gabriele, Joe Gill, Tom Gill, Jack Kirby, Tarpé Mills, Al Plastino, Don Rico, Joe Simon, Mickey Spillane, and Basil Wolverton.

Novelty's first title, Target Comics featured such stars as Bull's-Eye Bill, Lucky Byrd, and The White Streak (Target's first superhero). Material for the book was supplied by Funnies, Inc.

Basil Wolverton's Spacehawk made its Target Comics debut with issue #5, and ran for many issues.

The superhero Target, created by Dick Briefer under the pen name "Dick Hamilton", was introduced in issue #10 (Nov. 1940).

Blue Bolt's title character superhero was created by Joe Simon, and Blue Bolt #2 (July 1940) featured the first pairing of the longstanding and pioneering creative team of Simon and Jack Kirby.

Nothing is more important to Paula Deen than her family, and nothing makes that big family happier than sitting down to a meal together. In "Paula Deen's The Deen Family Cookbook, " Paula and the Deens, Hiers, Groovers, and Orts share their recipes and memories.

Paula's beloved Aunt Peggy makes an Old-Fashioned Meat Loaf that's as good in sandwiches the next day as it is for dinner. Baby brother Bubba Hiers brings his Beer and Onion Biscuits to the table, and his daughter, Corrie, makes a simple but luscious Lemony, Buttery Baked Fish that's perfect for a weeknight dinner. (Her Carrot-Pecan Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting are pretty tasty, too ) Son Jamie makes Huevos Rancheros, perfect for brunch, or try Bobby's Whole Wheat and Honey Pancakes. Husband Michael Groover knows his way around a grill: try his Company's Coming Grilled Steak and Veggie Supper for easy entertaining, and finish the evening with his Irish Coffee.

Of course, there was no way The Lady herself was going to let her relatives have all the fun: Paula is, after all, "Paula." She shares her recipe for the Ham and Chutney Biscuit Fingers she puts on the table at every family party as well as the Eggplant and Sausage Lasagna that went a long way toward getting the boys to eat their vegetables. And while there's plenty of butter, bacon, and mayonnaise in these pages, you'll find some of the lighter recipes that Paula enjoys, too: Seared Scallops with Pineapple-Cucumber Salsa is her first choice for a healthful but romantic supper with Michael, and Oven-Fried Chicken Breasts with Honey-Yogurt Drizzle lets Paula indulge in her favorite foods without guilt "and" with room for dessert.

With more than 140 recipes and dozens of beautiful color photographs, there's something here for everyone. So invite over all those aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, and treat them to some home cooking, Deen family style. . more
