Kraft has announced that they will be removing yellow artificial dyes out of three of kid-friendly-shaped macaroni and cheese varieties, according to Associated Press.

These varieties include SpongeBob SquarePants, Halloween, winter, and two other shapes in the future.

The new color will derive from spices like paprika, and the macaroni and cheese will contain more whole grains and less sodium and saturated fat.

This change will not, however, affect the plain elbow-shaped macaroni and cheese with the original flavor.

Kraft also noted in the press release that the petition on Change.org did not influence this decision. Back in March, two mom bloggers posted a petition asking Kraft to eliminate yellow dyes, which is said to be dangerous for kids’ health.

According to the petition, yellow dyes have been banned in countries like Norway and Austria, and are currently making its way out of United Kingdom markets. But, it is an approved additive by the Food and Drug Administration.

Food and color additives are being studied closer, as it is a health concern. While we hope that the original flavor doesn’t change in these varieties, we are excited to feel a little bit better about indulging in this homey treat.

She declined to specify whether Kraft would eventually make similar changes to its many other macaroni and cheese varieties. But she noted the company already offers some macaroni and cheese options that only use natural colors, such as several of its "Homestyle" varieties.

"We'll continue to make improvement where we can," Schmelter said, noting that the company tries to cater to evolving customer preferences.

Reports according to the USA Today states that, the bloggers have posted a video on YouTube showing the difference between the U.K. version of 'Cheesy Pasta' and the U.S. product that has harmful dyes. They noticed no difference in taste, but just a little difference in color.

The two harmful additives are the artificial food dyes Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. And according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the two colors are said to cause an increase in hyperactivity in children, hinder children's ability to learn, and is associated with long-term health issues such as asthma, skin rashes, and migraines.

Those two dyes, known collectively by their scientific name Tartrazine in Europe and elsewhere, have already been removed from Kraft's macaroni and cheese in Europe

It's not the first time the company has tinkered with its North American recipe in recent years to make "KD" healthier.

In 2014, the company launched a version that reduced saturated fat by 25 per cent and lowered the sodium content by 100 mg per serving.

One expert on food policy says the move is more about branding than a fundamental change.

"Kraft is moving in a direction where consumers are already at," says Sylvain Charlebois, a professor in food distribution and policy at the University of Guelph in Ontario.

Charlebois says Kraft's strategy is to try to "naturalize" a product that, while popular, had become synonymous with artificiality.

"What's striking is how artificial the powder is," he said. "It was a subject for many consumers.

"It made you wonder whether that thing actually glowed in the dark."

Two mothers are circulating a popular petition calling on Kraft Foods to remove artificial dyes, specifically yellow dyes 5 and 6, from its Macaroni & Cheese products. The additives, the bloggers say, are tasteless and potentially dangerous.

Food bloggers Lisa Leake and Vani Hari, who together launched a petition on Change.org, are concerned about the potentially harmful effects of the dyes on their children. They say the colorings have been associated with hyperactivity, allergies, migraines and, in some cases, cancer. The petition already has 149,806 supporters, as of this writing.

ABC News has a thorough explanation of Leake and Hari's cause, and details a letter the pair sent to Kraft outlining their concerns. Kraft spokesperson Lynne Galia responded to ABCNews.com in an email:

"The safety and quality of our products is our highest priority and we take consumer concerns very seriously. . We carefully follow the laws and regulations in the countries where our products are sold . So in the U.S., we only use colors that are approved and deemed safe for food use by the Food and Drug Administration."

Galia pointed out that Kraft sells at least 14 other Mac & Cheese products made either with natural food colors or without added color.

The FDA's website provides detailed information on color additives and their approval process. It also stands by them. "Without color additives, colas wouldn't be brown, margarine wouldn't be yellow and mint ice cream wouldn't be green," it reads. "Color additives are now recognized as an important part of practically all processed foods we eat."

Still, in 2011 an FDA panel considered requiring warnings on products made with artificial dyes. A New York Times article, published before the hearings, reported that they "signal[ed] that the growing list of studies suggesting a link between artificial colorings and behavioral changes in children has at least gotten regulators' attention -- and, for consumer advocates, that in itself is a victory."

Leake and Hari point to such studies, many of which are detailed in a 2010 report, "Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks." The report, based on government studies from the National Toxicology Program, recommended that yellow 6 be removed from the market.

Despite these studies, the FDA ultimately rejected the label proposal, citing lack of scientific evidence.

Kraft is hardly alone in using artificial dyes in its macaroni and cheese products. Yellow 5 and yellow 6 are found in other popular supermarket products, including those made by Fould's, America's Choice and Boston Market.

Similar products from Annie's, Back to Nature and Trader Joe's, however, are made without added color or with natural dyes, such as beta carotene color, annato or paprika.


Not all varieties affected

The new Kraft packages, which began appearing on supermarket shelves in recent weeks, also come stamped with a red circle noting they have no artificial preservatives or flavours. Kraft says its cheese slices haven't used artificial flavours for many years but that it just recently decided to advertise that aspect of the product.

"Consumers are looking for those less artificial cues and messages," said Gavin Schmidt, manager of cheese research and development at Kraft. "Those messages are more meaningful to consumers than they have been in the past."

Schmidt says the change took about five years to perfect because Kraft wanted to ensure the product's taste and shelf life remained the same. He declined to provide details but said it wasn't as simple as swapping out an artificial preservative and replacing it with a natural one.

"There's a little more to it than that," he said.

Schmidt said Kraft is testing the removal of artificial preservatives from its other Kraft Singles varieties but that it wanted to start with the most popular lines first. The changes do not affect Kraft Singles that are two per cent fat, fat-free or other full-fat varieties.

Kraft Foods Group, based in Northfield, Ill., also owns several other food brands, including Oscar Mayer, Jell-O, Planters and Maxwell House.
